5 Sure-Fire Tips To Lose Weight Fast

Think you can do 5 things all at the same time so you can lose weight fast?

It's possible.

You need to do them all.

No cheating.

Here they are (in order of importance):

  1. Prepare mentally and emotionally for weight loss and a new body image. Goal-setting, and daily visualization and meditation drive the mental and emotional prep. Meditation and mindfulness will also help reduce stress (always a factor in weight management). See this article: Determined To Lose Weight? PROGRAM Your MIND For Weight Loss.
  2. Limit sugar to 15 - 25 grams per day. If you have been reading this blog, you know that sugar is poison and counter-productive to weight loss and good health.
  3. Limit carbs to 120 grams per day (no bad carbs). Bad carbs are foods made with white flour as well as white rice.
  4. Increase fiber to 30+ grams per day with supplementation (a fiber supplement).
  5. Increase physical activity (especially strength training). If you can increase your physical activity with a hobby you have a passion for, this step will be a snap. A good example is landscaping/gardening. Digging holes for plants, lugging bags of mulch and dirt, and moving rocks (I live in New England - it's part of the landscape) sound a lot like strength training to me.

This process works if you stick with it.  In fact, if it becomes a permanent lifestyle change, it will help you maintain your ideal weight.

Best Diet To Lose Fat For Women Over 50 (NO Calorie Counting)

www.bestmediterraneandietonline.com
I have been blogging for more than a year about the diet/eating plan that helped me lose a stubborn 20 pounds. The weight came off easily after I visited a naturopath who advised a low sugar, low carb eating plan coupled with moderate exercise and stress management.

After  a few months on this plan, I lost the weight AND lowered blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

More recently, I found out the hard way that this eating plan also should include high fiber foods and a fiber supplement.

When you put the plan together, it requires NOT counting calories or restricting food, but paying attention to the following:
  1. Low sugar consumption (no more than 25 grams a day).
  2. Low carb consumption (no more than six servings for a total of 120 grams per day of good carbs). Bad carbs are anything with white flour and white rice). Also, carbs should not be consumed after 5 PM.  I'm also experimenting with gluten-free food, but that's another story.
  3. High fiber consumption (35 grams per day) with a supplement of your choice. I'm stuck with Metamusil for the next few weeks but after that, I am trying PGX.
Note that this diet/eating plan closely resembles the Mediterranean diet.

This is my observation, and it is confirmed by the father of functional medicine, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, in his book The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life

3 Simple Ways To Eat A Healthier Diet For Faster Weight Loss

If you want to lose weight, eating a healthy diet should be your first priority.  Exercise is important, but diet is king when it comes to lifelong weight management.
This post provides 3 simple ways to make healthy changes in the way you eat on a daily basis.
#1 Make sure to eat healthy fats in most of your meals.
Eating enough healthy fats is important for maintaining proper fat burning and muscle building hormone levels in your body.  Adequate healthy fats in your diet also helps in keeping your appetite under control.

The healthiest sources of dietary fats are raw nuts, seeds, egg yolks (from organic free range eggs), avocados, extra virgin olive oil (highest antioxidant content of olive oils), coconut oil (a great source of healthy saturated fats), and grass-fed meats (a great source of the healthy fat, conjugated linoleic acid, which can help burn body fat and build muscle).

Eat a handful of raw nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds are great healthy choices) 3 times a day about 30 minutes prior to meals.  This can help to quell your appetite and give your body some protein, fiber, and healthy fats so that you eat less calories overall at your meals and get more nutrition at the same time due to the high nutrient density of most nuts.
#2 Try to eat a high quality protein source with each meal and snack that you eat.
Quality proteins from grass-fed meats, grass-fed raw dairy, and even from plant sources such as nuts and beans provides appetite suppression so you can control your caloric intake easier.

Getting quality proteins also helps you to build lean muscle (if you're working out hard regularly) so that your metabolism can run at a higher rate from the increased lean muscle on your body.
Eating sufficient protein at most of your meals also aids your body in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels by helping to slow the breakdown of ingested carbohydrates.
#3 Minimize your grain consumption (from cereals, bagels, breads, pasta, etc) and you will start to lose body fat much easier.
Focus carbohydrate intake on fruits and vegetables solely. This simple step alone usually helps people to start managing their weight more easily.
One of the main reasons that so many individuals struggle to lose weight for most of their lives is due to eating excessive processed carbohydrates such as refined grain-based starches and refined sugars on a daily basis.
The natural sugars in whole fruits and berries are okay because the fiber in fruits helps to slow the blood sugar response in your body.  Just make sure to avoid fruit juices, which are mostly sugar and have the fiber removed in processing the juice.
Incorporate these 3 ways to eat a smarter, healthier diet into your daily routine and you’ll see a leaner body and more energy in no time.

3-Step Plan To Lose Weight Fast

When you search the Internet daily to find tips to help your peeps lose weight safely, you stumble on (not the app) the best articles.
This 3-step plan to lose weight fat parallels the “forever” low sugar/low carb plan I use all the time. The difference is that the 3-step plan, the goal is for short-term weight loss. In the forever plan, the carb limitations are higher (which is why you can use it all the time).
I will give you the condensed version of the article and then provide you with the link in case you want to read the article in its entirety.
Also, I know that one of the main hurdles to weight loss is having the meal plans that support your eating plan. Here’s 3 resources that will provide these meal plans at minimal cost:
The 3-Step Plan*
Objectives:
  • Kill Your Appetite
  • Lose Weight Fast Without Being Hungry
  • Improve Your Health
Step 1: Eliminate Sugars and Starches (carbs) from your diet
Bottom Line: Removing sugars and starches (carbs) from your diet will lower your insulin levels, kill your appetite and make you lose weight without hunger.
Step 2 – Eat Protein, Fat and Vegetables
Each one of your meals should include a protein source, a fat source and low-carb vegetables. Constructing your meals in this way will automatically bring your carb intake into the range of 20-50 grams per day.
Protein Sources:
  • Meat – Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, bacon, etc.
  • Fish and Seafood – Salmon, trout, shrimps, lobsters, etc.
  • Eggs – Omega-3 enriched or pasteurized eggs are best.
 Low-Carb Vegetables:
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Swiss Chard
  • Lettuce
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
Fat Sources:
  • Coconut Oil
  • Butter
  • Olive Oil
  • Lard
  • Tallow
Bottom Line: Assemble each meal out of a protein source, a fat source and a low-carb vegetable. This will put you into the 20-50 gram carb range and drastically lower your insulin levels.

Step 3 (Optional) – Exercise 3-4 Times Per Week
Bottom Line: It is best to do some sort of resistance training like weight lifting. If that is not an option, cardio workouts work too.
You Don’t Need to Starve Yourself to Lose Weight
If you have a medical condition then talk to your doctor before making changes because this plan can reduce your need for medication.
By reducing carbs and lowering insulin levels, you change the hormonal environment and make your body and brain “want” to lose weight.
This leads to drastically reduced appetite and hunger, eliminating the main reason that most people fail with conventional weight loss methods.
This is proven to make you lose about 2-3 times as much weight as a typical low-fat, calorie restricted diet.
Another great benefit for the impatient folks is that the initial drop in water weight can lead to a big difference on the scale as early as the next morning.
On this plan, you can eat good food until fullness and still lose a ton of fat.
Welcome to paradise.

Are You STILL Doing Useless Workouts On Elliptical Machines And Treadmills? Part II: Good Alternatives To Elliptical Machine And Treadmill Workouts

Part II: Excellent alternatives to elliptical machine and treadmill workouts
This post is Part II  of an article by Mike Geary, Certified Personal Trainer and author of The Truth About Six Pack Abs. He explains why workouts on elliptical machines and treadmills are worthless (Part I) and then presents alternative workouts (Part II).
Mike’s alternative workouts to those on elliptical machines and treadmills are as follows:
Outdoor wind sprints are the ultimate workout for a rock hard lean body. Look at the powerful yet super-lean and ripped bodies of world class sprinters, and compare that to the withering weakling physiques of typical marathoners. What would you rather look like?
Jumping rope creates incredible mind/body connection and is actually fun (you can try speed jumping, crossover jumps, and double jumps once you get good at it).
Kettlebell workoutsNothing will get your heart pounding and sweat pouring like high rep kettlebell swings and/or snatches (or clean and presses)! These can be done with dumbbells too, but I prefer kettlebells as they have a better "feel" to them and the unbalanced nature of KBs makes you work harder.
Bodyweight exercisesMountain climbers, bodyweight squats, push-ups, jumping drills, lunges, bear crawls, plank holds, and so on.
Rowing machineDon't lump this in as a "cardio" machine per se like elliptical machines and treadmills. Rather, the rowing machine is actually a great full body workout that uses real resistance.
Hill sprintingThis is running as hard up a hill as possible, followed by walking down and repeating as many times as you can for a full workout (yet another classic drill for a rock hard lean body).
Shadow boxing is a killer workout, but if you are shy, this is best done at home since you will get some crazy looks doing this at a typical gym!
Swimming sprints are a more muscle toning workout compared with steady pace distance swimming. You get an upper body pump from sprint swimming (instead of swimming slow and steady, with sprint swimming, you swim as fast as you can exerting as much force as you can for 1 lap. Then rest for 15-20 seconds before doing another swim sprint).
Heavy bag punching/kicking workouts, speed bag, rebounding bagAll are tremendous workouts and much more fun than boring cardio machines (requires an very intense mind/body connection which increases results).

I hope this article gives you plenty of ideas you can use to bring more variety into your workouts instead of relying on the same dull elliptical machine and treadmill workout routines.
Have fun!

Are You STILL Doing Useless Workouts On Elliptical Machines And Treadmills? Part I: Why These Workouts Are Useless and Ineffective

I found this article by Mike Geary, Certified Personal Trainer and author of TheTruth About Six Pack Abs. He explains why workouts on elliptical machines and treadmills are worthless (Part I) and then presents alternative workouts (Part II – future post).
Part I: Why Workouts On Elliptical Machines and Treadmills Are Worthless
The fact is, ellipticals and treadmills are one of the least effective methods of working out in existence. In this article, I'll show you how to get a much more effective fat-burning workout without wasting time mindlessly exercising on a boring elliptical machine or treadmill.
If you really honestly enjoy your elliptical machine workouts and treadmill exercise routines, then I give you my blessing to keep doing what you love. The reason is that even though ellipticals and treadmills are relatively ineffective compared to other types of exercises, whatever you actually enjoy doing the most is going to benefit you most in the long run because you will be more likely to stick with it more consistently.
However, don't say that I didn't warn you that you might be wasting your time with all these boring mindless cardio machine workouts.
I actually do not believe in cardio machines as a good form of working out at all. This might surprise you coming from a fitness nut such as myself, but I don't think I've personally used an exercise bike, treadmill, elliptical, or any other cardio machine for at least 8 years or more.
In fact, I don't even use cardio machines anymore for warm-ups before my workouts. I actually think it's a much more effective warm-up to do dumbbell and/or kettlebell swings, snatches, clean and presses, etc, mixed with bodyweight exercises as a great full-body warm-up.
Why do I think cardio machines are so awful?
Here’s 5 reasons why . . .
  1. Treadmills and ellipticals are just an ineffective way to work out compared to other options. Why should you do treadmill or elliptical workouts when you can get better results by doing more interesting forms of training that actually stimulate a fat-burning hormonal response and stimulate your metabolism to a greater extent.
  2. Elliptical machines and treadmills are insanely expensive and a waste of money for people who work out at home There are so many better things for home workouts you could have spent your money on rather than wasting it on an elliptical machine, treadmill, or exercise bike. You'll see plenty of ideas below for better home workouts if you don't like going to a gym to work out.
  3. I have seen several studies that indicated results that treadmill running may be less effective than outdoor running for various reasons such as stride abnormalities on treadmills vs natural running, slightly less caloric burn compared to outdoor running, and so on. Note:  I never recommend just "jogging" anyway. Variable intensity walking/running or sprinting are much more effective, training your heart rate in a much wider range instead of the same heart rate range the whole time.
  4. Steady state exercise (that doesn't require concentration on what you're doing) while watching tv or reading a newspaper or magazine creates a mind/body disconnect resulting in extremely poor results compared to exercise that requires focused attention.
  5. Elliptical and treadmill workouts are just mind-numbingly boring!

Lose Weight Fast: A Low Sugar Eating Plan Propels You To Weight Loss Targets

Unless you've been living in a Walden Pond environment without media contact, you know that sugar is the enemy of weight loss and that the WHO just issued recommendations for severe sugar restriction for adults (25 grams per day).

The health world finally recognized that excessive sugar consumption causes obesity and diseases like diabetes, kidney, and most recently, heart disease.

The bottom line is that to drop weight,
you need to restrict sugar (and carbs).

I have written a FREE weight loss ebook
(click HERE for your copy) showing you
how to lose 20 lbs in 1 month
with a low sugar/low carb eating plan.

Here's a quick video highlighting ebook contents:

Which Is Better For Fat Loss - Cardio Workouts or Weight Training?

In this post, Mike Geary, Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer and author of The Truth About Six Pack Abs Program, discusses cardio workouts. His intent is to get you thinking differently and trying new things.

Here's Mike . . .

You may know I've been called the anti-cardio guy before, but now I'm back posing the question to you . . .

Do you really need cardio training to get lean and in great shape?

By the way, you'll see in a minute that I'm not really "anti-cardio", just "anti traditional cardio".

Most fitness buffs, weekend warriors, or anyone trying to get in shape or lose body fat, believe they need "cardio" exercise to accomplish these goals. They would never even question it.

However, I'm not only questioning it, I'm going to refute it! In fact, you may be surprised to know that some of the leanest and meanest people I know (men and women), NEVER do any type of normal or traditional cardio. And I've spent over 15 years working out in various gyms, and hanging out with athletes of all sorts, so I've seen it all.

I will say that there can be a place for low-moderate level cardio for really overweight or deconditioned people, but even in those cases, there can be more effective methods.

But what exactly is "cardio"?
Most people would consider cardio to be pumping away mindlessly on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, or coasting on an elliptical machine, while watching the TV screen at their state of the art gym. This is what I call "traditional cardio".

Hmmm, no wonder the majority of people get bored with their workouts and give up after a couple months without seeing results.

But if you look closer, "cardio" exercise can be considered any type of exercise or activity that strengthens the cardiovascular system. I'm not going to get into anything technical like increasing your VO2 max or anything like that. To keep it simple, if it gets your heart pumpin, and gets you huffin and puffin, it's cardio. I don't care if you're holding dumbbells or a barbell and everyone calls it a weight training exercise . . . it's still conditioning your heart.

Examples
Let's take a look at a couple examples. Take a barbell (or dumbbell, or kettlebell) clean and press which involves lifting a barbell from the floor up to shoulders, then push pressing overhead.

And listen up ladies, because even though this is usually seen as a manly exercise, it doesn't matter if you're not lifting 250 lbs; if 45 lbs is challenging to you, then you will still benefit just as much.

At first glance, most people think of the barbell Clean and Press only as a weight training exercise or strength exercise. However, I challenge you to do a hard set of around 10-15 reps on the Clean and Press. If you used a challenging enough weight, what you'll find is that your heart rate is probably up to about 80-90% of your recommended max, and you are huffing and puffing like you just ran a 100-meter sprint (which by the way, sprinting kicks the crap out of jogging any day if you want the easiest way to lose the flab).

Try the same thing for a set of 20 reps of one-arm snatches or swings with each arm with a kettlebell or dumbbell, and tell me your legs aren't burning, heart racing, and you're gasping for breath. How about trying 5 minutes straight of bodyweight squats, lunges, and pushups with very little rest. Again, notice your heart pounding, sweat pouring off of you, and chest heaving for breaths!

Try and tell me you're not conditioning your heart with this style of training! Conventional thinking says that these are weight training or strength training exercises. However, they are fullfilling your cardio workout needs as well (and saving you time!).

Not only do you save time, but you strengthen and condition almost every muscle in your entire body with these full body exercises if you do them with enough intensity...something that can't be said for that boring stationary bike ride or treadmill jaunt while reading or watching TV.

Reading or watching TV while you workout is a joke! Seriously, if you can read or watch TV while doing any exercise, you're not concentrating enough on what you're doing, plus you're probably not working out hard enough to see any real results.

I challenge you to give the "traditional cardio" a rest for a month or two, and start training the way I explain in my internationally-selling
The Truth About Six Pack Abs, and see how you start getting leaner, more defined, and your six pack starting to show through what used to be stubborn stomach fat deposits.

Amazing! 600 People Lost 4000 Pounds In 10 Days on the 10-Day Detox Diet

Yesterday I wrote about Mark Hyman's new book, The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet: Activate Your Body's Natural Ability to Burn Fat and Lose Weight Fast.

This book has quickly reached number 1 status in Amazon books.

How has this happened when it was just released?

First, the good Dr. Hyman is a master salesmen. This newest book brings him to the front battle lines in the war against diabesity - in emails (I'm in his list), TV (the Dr. Oz show for one), and on the Internet.

That being said, the 10-Day Detox diet, specifically designed to ignite your body's fat burning and launch you into better health, works. Dr. Hyman did the work to test out the 10-day detox diet.

Here's the results according to Dr. Hyman's recent email:
America is dying of its obesity epidemic with chronic diseases now killing twice as many as infectious diseases do.
More than 70% of Americans are suffering from obesity. Many are desperately looking for a way to ignite and boost their weight loss, regain energy and heal their bodies. It is the solution to our health crisis.  And, I can prove it!
A year ago, 600 people volunteered to try The 10-Day Detox Diet. In just 10 days, they collectively lost over 4,000 pounds.
Most importantly, they enjoyed impressive health improvements, dropping their average blood sugar by 20 points, average blood pressure by 10 points and reducing all symptoms from all diseases by 62%. To top it off, they have sustained those successes for over a year!
Really?

600 People Lost 4000 Pounds In 10 Days.

On average, 6.67 pounds per person or 2/3 of a pound per day.

People - this is not a quick-fix diet. It will transition you into further weight loss and health improvement (it's an eating plan, not a diet).

What are you waiting for?

Losing Weight Does NOT Mean You Have To Be Hungry All The Time

If you are trying to manage your weight, it does NOT mean you have to be hungry all the time. If you eat the right kinds of food, being hungry will be a past condition.

Here's a typical example:
You have decided to lose weight so you choose a low sugar/low carb eating plan. You read the eating plan info in my FREE ebook How To Lose (at least) 20 Pounds In 1 Month (click the title to download your copy).

You are not counting calories, only grams of sugar and carbs you consume.

The sugar/carb guidelines are strict - 15 grams of sugar and 120 grams of carbs (six servings). To prevent the hunger pangs, you could transition to the lower sugar/carb guidelines. Or, you can substitute more good fats in your diet to address any hunger you may experience. What are good fats? Foods like avocado and certain nuts fits the bill.

Fats Help Satisfy Hunger

Remember that fats (except for trans fats) have been replaced by sugar and bad carbs as the bad boys of nutrition. This is what my fav doc (mercola.com) has to say about about fats to manage weight:
Consider that frequent hunger is oftentimes a clue that you're not eating correctly.
As a general rule, most people likely need upwards of 50-85 percent healthy fat in their diet, along with high amounts of vegetable carbs, moderate-to-low amounts of high-quality protein, and very little, if any, non-vegetable or grain carbs.
Fat is far more satiating than carbs, so if you have cut down on carbs and feel ravenous, thinking you "can't do without the carbs," remember this is a sign that you haven't replaced them with sufficient amounts of fat.
You do want to make sure you're adding the correct types of fat though. Sources of healthy fats include:
  • Olives and olive oil.
  • Avocados.
  • Coconut and coconut oil, as well as other unheated organic nut oils.
  • Butter made from raw grass-fed organic milk.
  • Raw nuts, particuarly macadamia nuts.
  • Organic pastured egg yolks.
  • Grass-fed and finished meats.
Buy that funny-looking avocado, slice it up into salads or make yourself a healthy avocado dip. It's a low-sugar, high fat food to help manage hunger and weight.

Not Seeing Any Weight Loss Results? Try These Suggestions

I've been answering questions on Yahoo! Answers and I keep seeing the same theme - I'm trying to lose weight, but I don't see any results!

Here's a prime example: This person said she "drastically changed lifestyle but not seeing any results?"
I am female, 23yrs, 26 BMI. I have weighed 130 for the past two years, before then I was always 90-100. I'm very short.
I have been struggling to eat 1,200 cals a day, I really feel full before I make it to that but I understand I need to not eat too little, either. And I do 30 mins each of yoga, general cardio, and targeted strength exercises for my abs, arms, and legs every other day. I've also started drinking 8 cups of water a day and walking more. And like I've said, I've been doing this for 4 weeks.
Is it normal not to see any progress yet?
My answers to these type of questions emphasize the low sugar/low carb eating plan as well as the right types of exercises to lose weight:
You started at 130 with BMI of 26.
What were your key measurements (biceps, waist, bust, waist, thighs, calves) when you started? Your progress can be measured by the way your body has changed, not just your weight.
I suggest you make a few tweaks (phase-in):
  • Instead of struggling with calories, focus on a low sugar/low carb (but good carb) eating plan.
  • Turn your cardio into interval training 2-3 times a week.
  • Keep up with the strength training and make sure you leave your body time to recover (max workouts - 3 times a week to allow for muscle recovery).
If this is your weight loss issue - you're not seeing any results after a month or two - you need to change up your methods, introduce them one at a time, and keep up your motivation!

Have A Burning Desire To Lose Weight Fast AND Live Longer? (Read This Article Written By A Doctor)

Okay, so I've been recommending a low sugar/low carb eating plan for months.

I've written a free ebook (get it by clicking HERE) showing you how to lose at least 20 pounds in 1 month on a low sugar plan.

Where have you been?

Once the Journal of American Medicine issued a study earlier this month which linked sugar to heart disease and a shortened life span, the docs have been publishing their take on the study.

This one - "Death by Sugar" by Dr. Mark Wiley* - caught my eye on several points:
  1. The title - sugar is killing people!
  2. Confusion occurs because different organizations make varying recommendations about "healthy" sugar consumption. What's new?
  3. The bottom line according to Dr. Wiley:
American citizens and many others around the world drink and eat more added sugar than is healthy.
And excess sugar doesn’t just mean excess weight. It’s life threatening.
We need to drastically decrease consumption of added sugar in all forms. To help you know where to start making changes, here are the major sources of added sugar consumption in the average U.S. diet:
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages (37.1 percent)
  • Grain-based desserts (13.7 percent)
  • Fruit drinks (8.9 percent)
  • Dairy desserts (6.1 percent)
  • Candy (5.8 percent)
So our old sweet treat (candy) is no so bad after all. Since we consume only 6 percent of calories from candy, perhaps it is time again to make candy a treat and just cut the sugar from everywhere else where it’s not needed.
Here's hoping you get this message!

The Most Critical Strategy For Eliminating Belly Fat (Hint: It's NOT Exercise)

Whoops!
These medical facts should not be a big surprise:

According to mercola.com,
About 80 percent of your ability to reduce excess body fat is determined by what you eat, with the other 20 percent related to exercise and other healthy lifestyle habits such as sleep and stress reduction.
What this means is that if your diet is based on sugar/fructose and processed junk food, your chances of getting flat, ripped abs, even if you work out religiously, are quite slim . . .
What does this mean for the average person? Cut down on sugar in your diet and you have the optimal recipe for getting rid of belly fat.

And you can lose 20 pounds in 1 month using sugar/carb reduction. Without exercise.

Click HERE to get a free ebook entitled How To Lose 20 Pounds in 1 Month.

Hold Your Sugar Intake to Lose Weight Fast and Focus on Wellness

I haven't posted for a while and a lot has happened healthwise.

Increased Signs of Aging
At age 63, many signs of aging are popping up despite lifting weights and changing my diet. And frankly, the 5 pounds I added last winter was not coming off like it had in the past. I've been taking blood pressure meds for about ten years. In the past year, high cholesterol has become an issue.

Of course my GP put me on Lipitor and then Crestor. The last dosage of Lipitor worked the best, bringing down the high cholesterol but raising liver enzymes into the danger zone. In other words, statins damage my liver cells. When I questioned the cost and health value of statins, the response was that I could try adjusting my diet.

On to the Naturopathic Route
Bottom line - I was going to find a way to reduce or eliminate the cholesterol meds. I am now seeing a naturopath (as well as the GP). She pointed out that past lab results have indicated blood sugar elevation. Great! Now I'm a "prediabetic." too. I knew about the elevated blood sugar but took no steps to address it.

Nutritional Adjustments
Under the care of the naturopath, I've made two simple nutritional changes - maintain sugar intake at 15 to 25 grams per day and substitute a veggie for dinner rice, potatoes, or noodles. These two changes have increased fiber intake, minimized sugar, and brought protein, carbs, and fat composition into balance.

Added Exercise/Activity
She also encouraged increasing the exercise level (2 strength workouts and 1 night of racquetball). That's relatively easy in the summer because there's landscape to maintain. Walking the dogs occasionally also helps all of us. My Fat Boy Simon has lost 2 pounds since the beginning of the year - 6% of his body weight.

Stress Reduction
Since I live in a rather stressful environment due to factors outside of my control, the naturopath encouraged stress management techniques such as meditation and therapy. I see a therapist regularly and have rescued the meditation CDs from storage. Also, the simple act of doing yard work creates an escape mechanism.

Quick Results
Interestingly, none of these lifestyle changes are new or revolutionary. They are really small tweaks to bring wellness back into my life.

With these adjustments, I lost a pound a week in the last month. That's mainly due to dropping sugar intake. I have six more weeks to work the adjustments suggested by the naturopath. Then she will re-evaluate blood work to see what's happening to cholesterol and sugar levels.

Want To Lose Twenty Pounds In One Month? Minimize This Bad Carb!

This morning I was listening to a famous boomer philosopher who lost
23 pounds in 29 days.

How did he do it?

The Story
Wayne Dyer has been around since the 80's talking about Erroneous Zones and writing creative self-help books like Excuses Begone!: How to Change Lifelong, Self-Defeating Thinking Habits.

I was listening to CD 3 of his audio program Making the Shift: How to Live Your True Divine Purpose.

In Making the Shift, he describes making a video for Excuses Be Gone. In the video, he has what appears to be a bowling ball under his shirt and wonders how his audience might receive his weightiness. Tough to explain when you can't come up with an excuse, although the common one is that older men "get thick" and there's nothing you can do about it.

There Are No Accidents
The day after the video viewing, Wayne met with Jorge Cruz, the exercise and weight loss specialist and author of The Belly Fat Cure: Discover the New Carb Swap System and Lose 4 to 9 lbs. Every Week.
Jorge relayed some startling facts like the following:
  • In the 1800's, Americans consumed about 15 grams of sugar per day.

  • At present, Americans consume 285 grams of sugar per day.

  • A 12-ounce Coke has 45 grams of sugar.

  • An 8-ounce glass of OJ has 30 grams of sugar.

  • A tablespoon of ketchup has 5 grams of sugar.
Get the picture?
We boomers have grown up with built-in sugar addictions perpetuated (and nourished) by Food Inc. The result - a lot of fat people of all ages. "Getting thick" is a MYTH. Jorge claims that if you reduce your sugar consumption to 25 grams per day, you will lose 20 pounds in one month.

And Wayne did it and lost 23 pounds in 29 days. And my co-worker just stopped drinking Coke every day and lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks.

Low carb eating plans work (I have used them).

A Caution

This is easy if you want a slimmer YOU. This is hard if you aren't aware that sugar exists in just about everything we eat that's processed. Our boomer challenge is to get healthy AND beat Food Inc out of the profits they make poisoning us. By the way - were you aware what cancer feeds on? You got it - SUGAR!
